The underground ballroom scene has it roots in Harlem, New York, and was created by Black and Latin Trans women and Drags, as a new safe space due to the racism they faced within the white pageant scene.
It evolved into many new categories and became not only a space for trans women of colour to enjoy the safeties of community but of all queer people of colour to create and express what was not allowed at the time to express in the public.
Ballroom is a place of love, unity, creativity and mutual respect.
Balls are the functions where participants who are part of the ballroom scene compete against each other for trophies. Participants most often are part of a house, chosen family separate from the family of origin. Houses are led by Mothers and Fathers who provide guidance and support to the house’s children. To compete to each other, Houses or 007 (people who are not or don’t want to be part of any house yet) walk categories at a given ball.
Balls include judges, Mc (host) and DJ. Participants dress according to the guidance of the category in which they are walking. Ball is a safe space for individuals to explore their creativity, create friendships, make statements and have fun. Ballroom welcomes everyone and respects everyone, regardless of race, gender, ethnicity, body, sex or status.
Any types of racism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, body shaming or any types of discrimination will not be accepted within the Ballroom scene.
If you are not a person of colour and/or person of queer experience, we would like to reinstate that you are a guest within the ballroom community and should follow rules as everyone else.
Please be mindful of the space you take as a guest, and you will be welcomed with open arms.
